Today we travelled to Niagara Dam. First stop was Leonora. This is the turnoff point for the Great Central Road which is a dirt road that will take you to Uluru over several days. We will give that a miss!
Leonora has a rather rundown feel with most of the shops closed. It would have been a very different thing a century ago.
We explored Gwalia, 3km south of Leonora. It is a living ghost town where many of the buildings are abandoned miner's cottages which have been done up to give a snapshot of the way of life the first half of last century.

The museum had a timber inclineheadframe constructed in 1898 when Herbert Hoover, who went on to become president of the United States in the 20's, was mine manager. It is the only one of these in Australia.

There was also a 2 cylinder steam powered Fraser and Chalmers engine rated at 1000 HP and capability of hauling 1500 feet per minute was the largest in Australia.

The mine is still operational although it has passed through many different hands since the early days.
Then we continued onto Niagara Dam where we will spend the night.
